Lost generations
My job usually takes me to the worst ghetto neighborhoods of my town. When I am there I can't help but be amazed at how some people live and act. We execute raids on houses and within minutes there are dozens of folks standing out in the street rubbernecking. These are grown ass men and women who should be at work at 10AM on a Tuesday but seem to have nothing better to do that hang out at my crime scene.
You would think that these crowds would be happy that we are actively clearing out drug houses. Nope. Instead they like to stand around and yell out helpful comments like:
(warning, this blog entry contains profanity -- Gordon)

Atlanta cop shoots man near Fulton courthouse
Atlanta police shot and wounded a fleeing suspect on the sidewalk near the Fulton County Courthouse about 4 p.m. Wednesday, leading dozens of other officers to descend on the scene and causing traffic to be rerouted.
Atlanta police detective Anthony Gentile said an officer with the police auto theft task force was pursing a suspect in a white Toyota when the suspect stopped the car in the middle of Pryor Street.
The suspect started running down the sidewalk with a pistol in his hand and the officer pursued, ordering the suspect to drop the weapon and stop, Gentile said.

CopCAST Episode 85 - Excessive Sound Effects
In the words of Mick Jagger, "Too much is never enough." OK, so we went a little overboard with the sound effects but therein lies the danger of giving little boys fancy toys. However our legion of listeners really came through for us by sending in some great local stories and our CopCAST correspondents searched the web to find some great news reports.
CNN never covers the really interesting stories like the robber who locked his keys in his get away car so we do. Most of us like to go on a department sponsored road trip every now and then. However, one Kentucky sheriff may have carried it a little far on a recent extradition. I apologize in advance but you know we were going to have to talk about the recent Big Foot finding. Like they say,"There is a sucker born every minute." We also tell you about a new program that provides e-mail for inmate. It actually is not as bad as it sounds. These are just a few of the stories we discuss this week.

Atlanta police make 40 panhandling arrests
Atlanta police say a mini-crackdown on aggressive panhandling in the city's Peachtree Corridor has yielded 40 arrests in the past 20 days.
Police also made 50 "interventions" — interrupting aggressive panhandling incidents before they reached a stage warranting arrest.
Major Khirus Williams is commander of Zone 5, where police have increased their presence of officers. He says they're dressing like tourists, convention goers and plain office workers to lure panhandlers who won't take no for an answer.

Fire destroy Fulton County church
Authorities Friday were investigating an early-morning fire that destroyed a south Fulton County church.
The two-alarm blaze broke out around 3 a.m. at the Emmaus Road Missionary Baptist Church, at the corner of Flat Shoals and Buffington roads, Fulton fire spokesman Gregory Chambers said.
Chambers said arriving fire crews found flames shooting through the roof of the sanctuary, but were able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby day care center and other buildings.

Crime & punishment
Some reports filed recently with Sandy Springs Police:
This victim reported that he and his girlfriend were arguing all day long. She left the residence and then later text-messaged him that she was on the way back with the police. The victim said he went outside of his apartment to wait on his girlfriend and the police. He said the girlfriend showed up alone and when she walked up to him, she grabbed and snatched his glasses from his face causing a scratch. According to him, she continued to assault him as he pushed her off while he attempted to retreat to his apartment. On the way, he pulled the fire alarm to hasten the response from the emergency services, who he hoped would help him. As he pushed his soon-to-be ex-girlfriend off of him while attempting to close the apartment door, she sprayed him with a chemical agent, probably pepper spray. He was visibly disabled but managed to get the door shut. When the fire department responded, the woman was gone and the victim refused treatment. The officers advised the man of known remedies for the pepper spray, and then gave him a case number. A passing neighbor noted the officers should have given him a coupon to man-camp instead.
Improper Frolicking
Officers were called to the Stratford Arms Apartments around 2 a.m. Officers found a couple in the pool, him with boxers on, and her with nothing on. They were cited for acting disorderly and sent on their way clothed.

Police dodge pots and pans to make arrest
Just about anything can be used as a weapon.
Pots and pans, for instance.
During a 25-minute standoff last weekend with Atlanta police officers, a teenager allegedly launched a steady stream of frying pans and skillets at police officers until he slipped on a floor covered with pepper spray and was handcuffed, according to a police report.
